A five-day course in the unspoilt, steeply terraced coastal village of Polruan, on the south coast of Cornwall.  Quiet, but with easy access to the hustle and bustle of Fowey, Polruan provides rich material for the artist. Our studio and base for the 5 days is Polruan Village Hall, ideally situated, with spectacular panoramas of the Fowey River and the open-sea. The studio has an outside terrace, giving artists the option of painting the river-view.

On the first part of the course Ashley will take the group to a number of favourite viewpoints in Polruan and Fowey, a short ferry-ride across the river. Artists will get to know their subject though drawing, making studies, collecting information and looking for ideas for paintings.

In the studio, with a combination of group exercises, demonstrations and discussions, Ashley will help artists develop their paintings, finding their own personal interpretation of the coastal landscape.  Colour, mark-making, space and composition are all areas that will be explored and there will be plenty of time for one-to-one tuition. As part of his teaching, Ashley will discuss the work of other artists and also work on his own painting of Polruan, demonstrating many tips and techniques.  The course will end with an informal group critique, where the artists get the chance to discuss the paintings made during the week and receive invaluable feedback about their work.

This course is suitable for painters of all abilities who wish to enhance their creativity. Please note that a reasonable level of fitness is required as Polruan as there will be some walking up and down the hill.
