Port Isaac is a traditional fishing village set amidst rugged and magnificent scenery on Cornwall's North coast, with narrow winding streets lined with whitewashed cottages that head down to the harbour.  Truly inspirational: a rich variety of viewpoints and subject matter, an intoxicating mix of the natural and the man-made coastal landscape.

On this 5-day painting course in Cornwall, we will be spending the first day on location, making studies and sourcing ideas for paintings. In the morning we will be taking the ferry from Rock to Padtstow, drawing the harbour and the glorious landscape of the Camel Estuary.  After lunch we will be taking the ferry back to Rock before heading off to the Pentire Headland with its' spectacular clifftop views. For the next 4 days, our base and studio will be Port Isaac Village Hall, with a drawing session around the harbour on Thursday morning.

In the studio, with a combination of group exercises, demonstrations and discussions, Ashley will help artists develop their paintings, finding their own personal interpretation of the Cornish coastal landscape.  Colour, mark-making, space and composition are all areas that will be explored and there will be plenty of time for one-to-one tuition. As part of his teaching, Ashley will discuss the work of other artists and also work on his own painting of Port Isaac, demonstrating many tips and techniques.  The course will end with an informal group critique, where the artists get the chance to discuss the paintings made during the week and receive invaluable feedback about their work.

This painting course is suitable for painters of all abilities who wish to enhance their creativity. Please note that a reasonable level of fitness is required as there will be some walking involved on our day out on location and there is some steep walking in and around Port Isaac.

"Ashley's concern as an artist and teacher, is to unleash the emotional response to the subject matter that enables the painter to take risks, discover a 'personal colour palette that excites' and to provide the fresh vision of Britain's natural beauty that places him within the long tradition set by the masters of the landscape genre." Dr. Sally Bulgin, Editor, ‘The Artist’ magazine, February 2013
